The 100 Best Rap Singles of 1990: M.C. Mitchski

Before transitioning into a behind-the-scenes industry role, Coney Island rapper MC Mitchski self-released this 12-inch beloved by diggers.

The 12-inch B-side includes three cuts highlighted by “What the Hell the Police Can Do?” In 2016, Mitchski told Paul Nice and DJ Toast’s Grown Man Rap Show that he used the sample from “Adams Groove,” a track on Tony D’s 1989 release Music Makes You Move that loops the Jackson 5’s “ABC.” “He was flipping samples and beats and stuff like that, and I took a portion of what he did and looped it to make [my record]. It was before [Naughty by Nature’s] ‘O.P.P.’ I was ahead of the game on that.” The results are three silly verses of Mitchski outwitting the cops that try to harass him. “If you wasn’t a cop I would cap ya/Or have Zsa-Zsa Gabor and have her slap ya,” he rhymes triumphantly.
