“The Pop” (Chocolate Star Records)

It’s unclear who MC Chocolate Star is, or how “The Pop” got made. Camden, New Jersey producer Gary Davis launched Chocolate Star Records after breaking from Peter Brown’s P&P operation, and released a handful of club records throughout the 80s before starting an entertainment company in South Florida. Despite occasionally appearing in local press and independent-film industry sites, he’s never discussed this strangely delightful post-disco curio, one defined by funky Casio keyboard riffs, Davis’ party-rocking vocal and an unnamed kid yelping, “Do that rock and you don’t dare stop/Well let me see somebody out there do the pop!” It has since appeared on numerous DJ mixes as well as Traffic Entertainment and Stones Throw compilations.
