The Masterdon Committee was assembled by Harlem DJ Donnell “Master Don” Martin and featured MCs Pebblee Poo (formerly of Kool Herc’s Herculoids), Gangster Gee, Keith KC, and Johnny D. The group’s best-known single is “Funkbox Party,” thanks to their chant “make ‘em say ughh/Na-na-na-na!” Years later, Master P made that chorus famous with his hit single “Make ‘Em Say Uhh.” (There’s evidence that “Funkbox Party” may have dropped in early 1983, despite a 1982 copyright.) “Gonna’ Get You Hot” is strong as well, with Pebblee Poo rapping energetically over Pumpkin’s electro-funk arrangement: “To the beat, to the bop, to the b-a-bang-bang/You rock to the rhythm of a new hot thang.” She later enjoyed a modest solo career, and continues to perform as a hip-hop pioneer. Master Don passed away in 1993.
