M.C. Mitchski
“Go with the Flow…”/“What the Hell the Police Can Do?” (Def City Records)
Coney Island rapper MC Mitchski the Rapping Comedian is best known for “Brooklyn Blew Up the Bridge,” an attempt to cash in on Boogie Down Productions and the Juice Crew’s vaunted Bridge Wars. But he also self-released several oddball 12-inches that are now beloved by diggers before transitioning into a behind-the-scenes role in the music industry, including marketing for Sony/RED Distribution and The Orchard. The A-side, “Go with the Flow…,” is a hilarious showcase for his Kool Keith-esque brand of bugged-out wit as he claims he’s not down with oral sex. “I ain’t gonna front, I love fish/But to go with the flow ain’t my type of dish,” he rhymes. “Safe sex is definitely legit/But what the heck is that bump on your lip?”
The 12-inch B-side includes three cuts highlighted by “What the Hell the Police Can Do?” In 2016, Mitchski told Paul Nice and DJ Toast’s Grown Man Rap Show that he used the sample from “Adams Groove,” a track on Tony D’s 1989 release Music Makes You Move that loops the Jackson 5’s “ABC.” “He was flipping samples and beats and stuff like that, and I took a portion of what he did and looped it to make [my record]. It was before [Naughty by Nature’s] ‘O.P.P.’ I was ahead of the game on that.” The results are three silly verses of Mitchski outwitting the cops that try to harass him. “If you wasn’t a cop I would cap ya/Or have Zsa-Zsa Gabor and have her slap ya,” he rhymes triumphantly.
